Let’s talk about books of photographic art, not photographic instruction.
In no particular order, you need to purchase the following:
MONDO DEFEKTO

Defekto comes from what I like to call John Waters’ Baltimore. It’s a magic land full of Polaroid Spectras and people having more fun than your parents would be comfortable with.
Portraits of Pretty People

I’ve had friends who moved away from L.A. and I’ve never had the urge to visit… Until I saw Lou’s photos.
You need these books, but if you’d prefer naked ladies on couches, try Merkley’s 111 (NSFW).
So, I have this plan for 2008. It’s one of these public-projects-for-myself kind of things. I’ve never used my flickr account as a gallery. It gets a strange assortment of photos and while there’s some stuff on there I’m quite fond of, it’d make a woeful portfolio. My plan involves two competing, but not mutually-exclusive projects. One is to put together a book of photos. It could go a few different directions and I haven’t committed to any one yet (I was originally planning on putting together a Polaroid book in 2007, but my ambivalence about that company got the best of me). The second project, a one photo per day site, will help me narrow that down. For this, I have resurrected fadedstations.com. The message board moved over to cowboymeme.com ages ago, so I don’t think anyone’s going to get confused by the redirect disappearing. It does confuse the last.fm group, but last.fm won’t allow name changes, so we’re stuck at least for now.
Fadedstations.com is going to feature one new and/or unpublished photo I’ve taken each day. I’m using some software to automate the process, so you can count on a new photo at 7AM GMT every single day. Right now, the plan is to focus on 35mm, but I don’t want to promise exclusivity at this point. Also, I’m going to be focusing on recent photos, but I’ll dig through the archives from time to time as I have with the first photo posted.
OK. I’m done now. Good night.
I don’t know how to describe Queen Mae and The Bells short of “wow”. I haven’t seen them live yet, but I can’t wait to get a chance to do so. Based on their video and photos of their other projects, I’m completely sold on the whole thing; the percussion, the screaming, the costumes. Sign me up.
